Subconscious led therapy is an exceptional form of mindful therapy, based on the well known link between the mind and body. The way we think about components of our lives affect the way we feel (and react) which as a result impact our physical health. Side note: The Body Keeps the Score is a very good book for understanding how we can consciously forget trauma but our body holds on to it.
Most of us understand that our mindset impact the way we react to people and situations - which means we can change our lives, open up to possibilities and end chronic low grade depression just by changing the beliefs (or programs as I call it) in our system.
These programs are held in our subconscious or as many psychologists will call it, the unconscious. Subconscious led therapy uses The Subliminal State to allow us access to this part of our mind in order to do the work of ‘reprogramming’ or to discover the cause of our real life issues - be it behavioural or physical symptoms.
The Subliminal State is a brainwave state.
Being in the Subliminal State is being in a lowered brain wave state. (The 5 brain wave states explained.) It is no different to being in a meditative state or hypnotic state. For this reason, I will use The Subliminal state interchangeably with the hypnotic or meditative state.
As you are learning from me right now, you are probably in a Beta brain wave state. You are in your creative genius and flow in the Alpha brain wave state - it is also the beginning of the subliminal state. Going deeper into the Theta state, you become extremely creative and intuitive. Pain perceptions are also altered which makes it useful for birthing. When you daydream or in deep prayer, you are likely to be in a theta state. You’re in delta brainwave state when you are sleeping.
The subliminal state is when you are in alpha, theta or delta brainwave state, which is actually a very safe and normal brainwave state available to everyone.
There is nothing supernatural or woo about it.
What does it feel like?
Many clients say they feel very relaxed and very aware. Except for a rare few, everyone who can follow instructions partake in a visually delicious journey that is calming and yet adventurous. The client is in control of the experience. As it has been said, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.
Sometimes, the client needs rest after prolonged periods of anxiety and feels as though he had a long sleep. In this state, your body gets the rest it needs to rejuvenate because the nervous system is finally allowed to be at rest.
I am resistant to meditation. Can I get into the Subliminal State?
Hypnosis in media has given it a bad reputation. The reality is you cannot be made to do things against your will. In fact, any suggestions given which go against your fundamental beliefs will be rejected. Choosing to respond to suggestions would mean that you are in control of your mind and body. I actually find it ironic that people are more willing to accept daily detrimental suggestions from society and culturally because of the lack of awareness that the subliminal state brings.
The subliminal state is a natural state and humans have a natural capacity to respond to it. Like the first time you exercise a muscle, it will seem foreign. Over several practices however, you strengthen the mind-body connection and it comes more easily. Many of my clients are surprised at how easily they achieve the Subliminal state. All you need is basic intellectual ability to follow visual cues and trust in your control of the process.
Would you like to check on your responsiveness? All you need is a quiet space to yourself and follow some simple instructions on the following audio.
What if I see things I cannot handle?
Subconscious led therapy is a gentle and guided experience where your subconscious only reveals what you are ready to process. Your mind has natural protective mechanisms, ensuring that you will never see or feel anything you cannot handle. If something arises that feels intense which can happen in a guided therapeutic setting, it will be navigated together safely, always at your pace. You remain in control the entire time, able to step back or shift focus if needed. My clients are interacting with me vocally during our sessions and can tell me what is needed. Usually, my clients find that what once felt overwhelming becomes surprisingly manageable in this state, as their subconscious presents insights in the most supportive and healing way possible.
The evidence of the benefits:
Emotional Regulation
The connection between the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala, improving emotional control.
Stress and Anxiety Reduction
Dr. Benson had done a preliminary study showing that meditation seemed to lower blood pressure, an effect of great interest to cardiology. Dr. Benson was to pursue this finding much further and later wrote a book called “The Relaxation Response,” which became a bestseller. The “relaxation response” was a more reader-friendly way of talking about “parasympathetic nervous system arousal.
A meta-analysis in JAMA Internal Medicine (2014) found that mindfulness meditation programs can significantly reduce anxiety, depression, and stress.
A look at 15 studies that show hypnotherapy helped clients more than 79% of non hypnotherapy clients in working through anxiety.
Lowers Blood Pressure & Supports Heart Health
As the subliminal state promotes relaxation and the parasympathetic system, it reduces stress hormones, leading to lower blood pressure.
A 2009 study in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes found that transcendental meditation reduced the risk of heart attack and stroke in high-risk individuals.
Immune system boost
The subliminal state can enhance immune system function by reducing stress-related inflammation and increasing antibody production.
Pain Reduction
Pain sensation is processed at several levels before it becomes a perception. Previous experiences, mood, expectations and stress are only a few of the factors that are known to modify pain perception (Ploghaus, Becerra, Borras & Borsook, 2003; Villemure & Bushnell, 2009). The subliminal state decreases activity in the somatosensory cortex, which is responsible for pain perception.
A study in The Journal of Neuroscience (2011) found that mindfulness meditation reduced pain intensity by 40%—a greater effect than even some pain medications.
Hypnobirthing is also well documented showing the effectiveness of our state of nervous system on our pain perceptions and thresholds. Birthing without pain relief may seem like a far off dream but it is very doable.
